Acid reflux can be a painful condition where the acids from the stomach flow back to the esophagus. This can be debilitating especially if your GERD symptoms are chronic. There are treatments available to alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux and some can be bought over-the-counter. However, if prescription medications failed, you may undergo an acid reflux surgery to relieve the symptoms.

The procedure to relieve acid reflux symptoms is known as Fundoplication surgery. This procedure is only recommended for acid reflux sufferers with extreme cases. This works by wrapping around the upper curve of the stomach known as the fundus. It is wrapped around the esophagus and sewn into place anchoring it to the diaphragm to strengthen the valve between the esophagus and the stomach. It also creates a protective fold between the stomach and the entrance to reduce the recurrence of acid reflux.

This procedure only requires you to stay in the hospital for two or three days. After the surgery, you are required to eat soft food diet. It is also recommended that you avoid physical activities for at least two weeks.

Laparoscopy is also a common acid reflux surgery to reduce heartburn. This procedure is done by gathering the upper part of the stomach and sews it around the lower part of the esophagus. This leaves a small opening from the stomach muscles to allow the esophagus to pass through. This lessens the risk of acid reflux.

Before you consider acid reflux surgery, make sure that you consult with your physician first to fully examine your health. Make sure that you discuss possible complications and risks to know what you should expect after the procedure. The success of acid reflux surgery depends on the experience of the surgeon, so when you decide to undergo this treatment, look for a credible surgeon and find out how many procedures of the same case was performed and their success rate.
